I love your writing. You write like you are my/our friend dashing off a letter or message from their heart, funny, poignant, wearing your heart on your sleeve. And that’s because - mostly if not always - you are writing about things you care about and you have found your people because so many of us care about them too. Or if we don’t - you educate us (my knowledge of wildlife topics has increased no end via your Instagram posts!). But also, you fall into the best category of writers - you make a connection and uplift your readers.
I saw Joanna coming out of an event at Somerset House as I was going into it and she was hobbling in heels on the cobble stones. She was, in that moment, both a goddess and a mortal. I love her.
I’ve always known Joanna because my dad had a crush on her as a Bond girl when I was wee. But, she became my own love in 1993 when I saw her in Absolutely Fabulous in Marrakech (“I would, Eddy, if I wasn’t trailing behind this…insect”). Even as an American (which I sadly don’t care to admit to a Brit these days - it feels embarrassing now) Joanna has felt like a savior to me as well. 10 years ago when I was in cancer treatment it was Joanna in AbFab and Cold Comfort Farm that really helped get me through. (“Is it a bee?”)
Not unlike our Jo, you, too, bring me such joy, Arthur. You have such a pure and wondrous outlook on the world. And like you, gardening is my comfort and sanity to my very core. You bring a lot of joy into my life, from all the way across the pond.
The only answer to a knotted shoulder is a good osteopath or a vicious sports physio. As a gardener you need at least one of the above in your life. As a fellow gardener I hear your pain and can advise from a position of experience, I have and need both.
Ps I disagree, you ARE good on Substack, much better than me anyhow! You’re always posting snippets to draw people in. I do think people can succeed on this platform by doing their own thing rather than trying to do what everyone says you have to do (ie relentlessly post nonsense and comment vacuously on everyone’s posts to get noticed - oops is that what I’m doing??!!) Stick to your guns.
I too was so disappointed that the garden bridge didn't happen. We need positive things like that in our lives, and if they had really bought into it, it could have been done 'on a budget' - I mean, the whole nation could have propagated plants for it, then everyone would have ownership of it and feel proud of it.

Agree with all you’ve said. The garden bridge would have been superb.
I think you're a great writer

I love your posts Arthur- I always agree with you! The Garden Bridge would have been a winner and I was gutted when it was abandoned.
Happy New Year Arthur and I love reading you on substack
Excuse me, I think you’ll find you are an excellent writer. Banish this imposter syndrome at once.
Just seen ‘Hen Party’ on Amazon available for pre-sale. Get plugging Arthur!

She stopped me to give her directions once, she was exactly as you might imagine - such a lovely person. Happy New Year Arthur
